Coton De Tulear Information The Coton de Tulear is a rare breed that originates from Madagascar. Legend has it that these little dogs were the sailor's companions and after a shipwreck off the east coast of Madagascar the dogs swam, made their way to the island and bred with the native dogs there. This little white shaggy dog quickly became the "Royal Dog of Madagascar" and was coveted by the royalty of Madagascar. Soon this intriguing little dog was ruled to be companions for nobility only. Although the Coton de Tulear is still considered to be rare in it's homeland, it has become increasingly more popular in Europe and here in the United States. It's intelligent, happy and lively personality has made it a favorite among many. Still considered a rare breed in the United States, rare breed enthusiasts have taken a keen interest in this amazing and most delightful breed. They are extremely intelligent and their daily "mission" is to make you happy. What could make you smile or laugh more than to see one of these little dogs playfully and skillfully dancing like a miniature polar bear! If you are having a bad or stressful day they can cheer you like no other. The Coton de Tulear is very fond of his family members and is so very capable of interpreting and anticipating the wishes and moods of their master. They are eager to please and love being involved in family matters. They are precious playmates and constant companions for driving away or relieving loneliness. If you enjoy traveling then you have the right dog to accompany you! Not too large and not too small, the Coton easily fits into most any traveling situation. The Coton loves to join you anytime you travel by car, plane, boat, bicycle, etc. Excursions to the beach, city, country or wherever, they just want to be with you wherever you are. We decided to bring up these wonderful dogs as if they were our children by giving them the same fondness, passion and especially the same complete and unconditional love. Our relationship with our dogs is based on a sweet and affectionate bond and mutual respect. They all live inside our home with us and sleep on our bed. The puppies are raised in our midst as well so they are subject to the necessary socialization that is vital for their development. This little companion dog does not do well when left for hours alone or in a crate except for sleeping at night if necessary. They do not shed like many breeds but do "lose" hair like we do when brushing our own hair. Because their hair is relatively dander free the Coton de Tulear works out well in homes where people may have allergies. We are involved in several organizations for conformation and we have shown our dogs with ARBA, RARITIES, and IABCA. They have championships with these organizations. This is an excellent way to meet other Coton fanciers who show or breed their dogs and to gain a wealth of knowledge regarding this breed. We are committed to enhancing our breeding lines by proper and continual education. We only breed dogs that have sweet temperaments, that are in compliance with the breed standard and are found to have no heredity disease or defects. Testing for eye, hip, patella and thyroid are all current and are found to be normal and healthy.
